Geological Survey of Finland, GTK

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) produces impartial and objective research data and services in support of decision-making in industry, academia, and wider society to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, carbon-neutral world. GTK is a research institution governed by the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, operating in Finland and globally.

In PEAT-GENIE, GTK:

  • coordinates the project
  • leads communication, dissemination and open science activities
  • contributes to peatland expertise and environmental data integration
  • participates in AI/GenAI development

Beak Consultants GmbH

Beak Consultants GmbH is a modern and fully integrated, innovative service enterprise, with headquarters in Freiberg/Germany. We offer our clients from the private and public sectors a broad range of planning, research and development services in the fields of geosciences, environment, GIS and information technology.
Traditionally, we carry out services in the fields of applied geology – including geochemical mapping, geological mapping, mineral potential modelling, 3D geological modelling, hydrogeological modelling, remote sensing and drone surveying. Furthermore, we provide services for biodiversity and species mapping and environmental monitoring.
On the other side, we plan and implement tailor-made databases, map production tools and geo-information systems that are customized and adjusted to the needs and requirements of our customers and the existing IT-infrastructure.
Since 2027, Beak has developed machine learning software tools and released a software package called “advangeo Prediciton”, which can be used for the forecast of any event or phenomena using spatial data.

In PEAT-GENIE, Beak:

  • Contribute in WP3 – Data Collection, Integration and Preprocessing – and lead Task 3.1 – Data harmonization and semantic integration

CeADAR – Ireland’s Centre for Applied AI

CeADAR – Ireland’s Centre for Applied AI supports businesses and organisations to explore, experiment, and build innovative AI solutions into processes and products, transforming productivity, competitiveness, digitalisation and sustainability. CeADAR is a technology centre funded by Enterprise Ireland and Ireland’s Industrial Development Authority.

In PEAT-GENIE, CeADAR:

  • Contributes to all AI model development (both predictive and GenAI) and leads AI development for land cover monitoring
  • Contributes to validation and testing activities in case studies
  • Contributes to communication and dissemination of the results

CSC – IT Center for Science

CSC – IT Center for Science is a state-owned, non-profit organisation that provides advanced digital infrastructure, data management, cloud services, and high-performance computing solutions for research, education, and innovation in Finland. CSC supports universities, research institutes, public organisations, and businesses by enabling data-intensive research and collaborative projects. The organisation operates national computing platforms and promotes the effective use of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and research data across disciplines.

In PEAT-GENIE, CSC:

  • Provides HPC infrastructure and expertise for the PEAT-GENIE platform
  • Ensures alignment with other Digital Twins initiatives
  • Contributes to communication and dissemination of the results

Danish Nature Agency

The Danish Nature Agency is an agency under the Ministry of Animal Welfare and Nature of Denmark, which manages the Ministry’s approximately 200,000 hectares of forests and natural areas, and carries out practical tasks within hunting and game management and specific outdoor and nature projects – often in collaboration with other authorities, organisations and volunteers.

In PEAT-GENIE, NST:

  • participates as Primary End User

Estonian Fund for Nature

Estonian Fund for Nature (Eestimaa Looduse Fond, ELF) is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to nature conservation in Estonia. ELF is focused on the three major ecosystems of our nature: the sea, the forest, and wetlands. ELF also deals with climate change, species protection and a wide range of educational activities.

In PEAT-GENIE, ELF:

  • leads the engagement, testing and feedback collection of external end-users
  • helps identify and characterise Estonian peatland test sites
  • co-develops guidelines and best-practice materials on end-user engagement

Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland

The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is an independent geoscientific research and advisory institution in the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities operating in Denmark and globally. Within the context of the green transition, GEUS has extensive expertise in understanding the interactions between climate, land use and the water cycle. GEUS’ research combines geology, geochemistry, hydrology and advanced modelling to assess how natural processes and human activities affect the terrestrial water cycle.

In PEAT-GENIE, GEUS:

  • contributes to peatland expertise and environmental data integration
  • participates in AI/GenAI development for groundwater modelling
  • leads validation and testing activities in case studies

IT4I@VSB

IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center at VSB – Technical University of Ostrava is a leading research, development, and innovation centre active in the fields of high-performance computing (HPC), data analysis (HPDA), artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing (QC) and their application to other scientific fields, industry, and society. IT4Innovations operates the most powerful supercomputing systems in the Czech Republic, provided to Czech and foreign research teams from academia and industry. The key research areas of IT4Innovations include big data processing and analysis, machine learning, development of parallel scalable algorithms and algorithms for quantum computers and simulators, solutions to computationally demanding engineering problems, advanced visualisation, virtual reality, modelling for nanotechnologies, and material design.

In PEAT-GENIE, IT4I@VSB:

  • co-develops AI solution for user-model communication
  • implements and integrates PEAT-GENIE Platform

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden

RISE Research Institutes of Sweden is Sweden’s research institute and innovation partner. Through international collaboration with industry, academia, and the public sector, RISE ensures business competitiveness and contributes to a sustainable society. RISE brings leading expertise in applied artificial intelligence, machine learning, user-centred systems design, and digital solutions for environmental and climate resilience.

In PEAT-GENIE, RISE:

  • leads the development of robust and trustworthy AI modelling and uncertainty estimation frameworks (Task 4.5 & Task 4.6)
  • contributes to data-driven AI modelling for peatland hydrology, GHG flux estimation, land cover monitoring, and biodiversity assessment
  • develops explainable AI (XAI) frameworks and sensitivity analysis methods to enhance model transparency, identify key predictive drivers, and ensure robustness against domain shifts
  • supports the backend integration of DestinE-aligned Digital Twins for peatland ecosystems
  • contributes to user-centred design and evaluation of decision-support interfaces

Tapio Palvelut Oy

Tapio is an independent expert in forests, nature, and geospatial information.

Tapio develops new operating models for the forest sector, produces expert content and impartial information to support decision-making, and provides independent solutions based on forest, environmental, and geospatial data through multiple channels.

Through projects related to forestry and land use, we promote more sustainable practices across the land use sector and, in many cases, directly improve the environmental condition of project areas. Our mission is also to ensure that the latest knowledge, innovations, and best practices are transferred as effectively as possible into practical use by our customers.

In PEAT-GENIE, Tapio:

Teagasc

Teagasc – the Agriculture and Food Development Authority – is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities. The Teagasc mission is to support science-based innovation in the agri-food sector and wider bio-economy that will underpin profitability, competitiveness and sustainability. The Teagasc research programme is comprehensive and covers four broad programme areas, namely; Animal and Grassland Research and Innovation; Crops, Environment and Land Use; Food; Rural Economy and Development. The Teagasc PEAT-GENIE team have extensive experience in peatland hydrology, peat characterisation, emissions profiling, carbon sequestration and land use and management

In PEAT-GENIE, Teagasc:

  • Participates in validation and testing of the PEAT-GENIE platform in case study areas
  • Leads the internal feedback collection and analysis of platform performance
  • Engages on user-centric design and end-user engagement
  • Leads the evaluation of the refined tools and best practice following end-user feedback

University of Tartu

The University of Tartu (UNI TRT), is Estonia’s oldest and leading research university, and the country’s national centre for research and higher education in the natural sciences. Its Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences conducts long-term research on peatland hydrology, ecology and restoration. The institute maintains a network of Estonian peatland monitoring sites (about 200 automatic water-level loggers, plus peat, vegetation and faunal surveys) covering pristine, degraded and restored peatlands.

In PEAT-GENIE, UNI TRT:

  • leads biodiversity assessment and the development of the biodiversity submodel
  • leads site selection and baseline characterisation of the validation sites in Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Ireland
  • contributes peatland hydrology, ecology and field monitoring expertise and Estonian in-situ data

University of Turku

The University of Turku (UTU) is one of Finland’s leading multidisciplinary research universities, with internationally recognized expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, remote sensing, and environmental data science. UTU conducts high-impact research that supports sustainable solutions for environmental monitoring, ecosystem management, and digital transformation. Through its strong research infrastructure and collaborations with academia, industry, and public organisations, UTU contributes to the development of innovative data-driven technologies for addressing global environmental challenges.

In PEAT-GENIE, UTU:

  • leads the development of AI models for prediction and change detection
  • contributes expertise in machine learning, deep learning, and geospatial AI
  • develops models for hydrology, greenhouse gas flux estimation, biodiversity assessment, and land cover monitoring
  • participates in the development and evaluation of GenAI-based decision-support tools

Wetlands International Europe

Wetlands International Europe (WI-EA) is the European regional office of Wetlands International, the only global non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. WI-EA brings together NGO members from nine European countries, connecting science, policy and on-the-ground practice.

In PEAT-GENIE, WI-EA:

  • leads engagement with end-users to shape the platform around their actual needs
  • helps test and validate the platform across the case study sites in Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Ireland
  • contributes to communicating and sharing the project’s results

Metsähallitus

Metsähallitus is a state-owned enterprise that produces environmental services for a diverse customer base; ranging from private individuals to major companies. We use, manage, and protect state-owned land and water areas and reconcile the different goals of owners, customers, and other stakeholders. We work to ensure that everyone – including future generations – has the opportunity to enjoy nature and the value it creates.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

The mission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry MMM is to create growth, wellbeing and security from natural resources. Through its activities, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry promotes the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The administrative branch of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry covers agriculture and horticulture, rural development, forestry, veterinary care, supervision of foodstuffs of animal origin and fishing. The Ministry is also responsible for game husbandry and reindeer husbandry, the use of water resources and land surveying.

In PEAT-GENIE, MMM:

  • provides data,
  • engages with end users,
  • supports the testing and validation of the tools developed in the project.

Sorø Municipality

Sorø Municipality is located on the island of Zealand in Denmark and administers an area of approximately 300 km². The municipality includes Åmosen, the largest connected peatland on Zealand, which has historically been used for agriculture and has undergone extensive restoration in recent years. Sorø Municipality oversees land-use changes and restoration activities as part of its rural planning mandate. The municipality has also been involved in an EU LIFE project focused on the restoration of raised bogs within Åmosen. 

In PEAT-GENIE, Sorø Municipality:  

  • provides data of past and ongoing restoration   
  • gives feedback to the digital twin development
