Trusted environmental decisions with PEAT-GENIE
Peatlands are important for the climate, water and biodiversity. Yet decisions about their management and restoration are rarely simple, because the available environmental data can be difficult to combine and interpret.

Peatlands are important for the climate, water and biodiversity. Yet decisions about their management and restoration are rarely simple, because the available environmental data can be difficult to combine and interpret.
PEAT-GENIE brings together the data and makes it easier the use.
The project will develop an open, user-friendly platform that uses artificial intelligence, generative AI and digital twins to explore how different management choices could affect peatland hydrology, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and land cover.
With PEAT-GENIE, policymakers, land managers, restoration practitioners, researchers, research infrastructures and other organisations working with peatlands and environmental data will be able to compare possible scenarios and receive results in clear language suited to their needs.
The tools will be developed together with users and tested at real peatland sites in Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Ireland. Although peatlands are the project's main case study, its methods and technological solutions are designed to be useful for other ecosystems as well.
The project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe programme.

Why is PEAT-GENIE needed?
There are large amounts of high-quality environmental data in Europe, such as field observations, satellite data, research infrastructure datasets, national information and simulations produced through initiatives such as Destination Earth. However, this data is stored in different places and use different formats, spatial scales and time periods. Combining them can require considerable technical expertise and may also be difficult for non-specialists to access or interpret.
As a result, valuable information does not always reach the people making decisions about land use, restoration, climate adaptation or ecosystem management.
PEAT-GENIE was established to bridge the gap between environmental data, advanced modelling and practical decision-making.
