What is PEAT-GENIE?

PEAT-GENIE is a European research and innovation project developing new ways to use complex environmental data in practical decision-making.

The project’s main output will be an integrated, open-source decision-support platform that helps users explore how different environmental and land management choices may affect peatlands.

The platform will combine environmental observations, satellite data, climate simulations, national datasets and research infrastructure data with predictive models, digital twins and generative AI in a single user-friendly system.

Four interconnected digital twins focusing on peatland hydrology, greenhouse gas fluxes, biodiversity and land cover will help predict environmental change and assess the potential impacts of actions such as restoration, rewetting and land-use change.

Users will be able to interact with the platform through a web interface including a generative AI. The AI will help formulate and explore “what if” scenarios in everyday language and translate complex modelling results into clear explanations tailored to different users and levels of expertise.

The platform will be co-developed and tested with users at peatland sites in Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Ireland.

Alongside the platform, PEAT-GENIE will produce harmonised AI-ready datasets, reusable workflows and best-practice guidance for environmental digital twins, peatland management and decision-making.

By making complex environmental information easier to explore and interpret, PEAT-GENIE aims to support informed decision-making and help people working with environmental issues better understand the potential consequences of different actions before they are implemented.

While peatlands are PEAT-GENIE’s primary focus, the approaches developed can also be adapted to other ecosystems and environmental challenges.

Who will benefit from PEAT-GENIE?

Potential users of PEAT-GENIE’s outputs include:

  • land managers and peatland restoration practitioners
  • public authorities and policymakers
  • environmental organisations
  • researchers and research infrastructures
  • organisations providing environmental and Earth observation data
  • agricultural, forestry and land-use advisers
  • local and regional communities involved in peatland management
  • developers of environmental digital twins and AI services

PEAT-GENIE brings together 20 organisations from 10 European countries. The project partners include universities, research organisations, a European research infrastructure, technology and AI specialists, public authorities, environmental organisations and partners working directly with peatland management and restoration.

This combination of expertise covers the full path from environmental observations and scientific modelling to platform development, user engagement, real-world testing and practical application.

The Geological Survey of Finland GTK coordinates the project.

Funding and timeline

PEAT-GENIE is funded under the Horizon Europe call HORIZON-INFRA-2025-01. The project has been awarded a maximum Horizon Europe grant of EUR 8,819,099.35. The grant is provided as lump-sum funding by the European Union through the European Research Executive Agency.

The project runs for four years, from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2030.
